How Many Sets Should You Actually Do?

Volume, roughly, the number of hard sets you perform for a muscle group per week, is one of the strongest levers you have for building muscle. Of all the training variables researchers have studied, weekly volume shows the clearest and most consistent dose response signal for hypertrophy.

What the research says

A widely cited meta analysis by Schoenfeld, Ogborn, and Krieger (2017) pooled controlled trials that manipulated training volume and found a graded relationship: on average, each additional weekly set was associated with a further increase in muscle growth, and the highest volume category (roughly ten or more sets per muscle per week) produced the greatest gains.

More recent and larger meta regressions have reinforced the same shape: more weekly volume tends to mean more growth, but with diminishing returns at the top end, so doubling your sets does not double your results. The practical takeaway is that a meaningful amount of volume is needed to maximize growth, but there is a point past which extra sets mostly add fatigue.

A practical range

For most people, roughly ten to twenty hard sets per muscle group per week is a productive range. Start near the bottom of that range, around ten to twelve quality sets, and only add volume when your progress stalls and your recovery can clearly handle more.

It is far better to do twelve well executed sets you recover from than twenty sloppy ones that leave you beaten up and under recovered. "Junk volume", extra sets done with poor effort or terrible fatigue, costs you recovery without buying much growth.

Strength is a little different

If your goal is maximal strength rather than size, the emphasis shifts toward heavier loads and lower reps on a handful of key lifts, with somewhat less total volume and more rest between sets.
